For Patients

Private medical care on the Isle of Man — on your schedule, without the wait.

Private Healthcare on the Isle of Man

When you need to see a specialist, you should not have to wait months — or travel off-island. IOMD members provide private specialist care right here on the Isle of Man.

Why Choose Private Healthcare

Private healthcare puts you in control:

  • Shorter waiting times — see a specialist within days, not months
  • Direct access — no GP referral required in most cases
  • ** Choice of specialist** — you choose who treats you
  • Flexible appointments — many members offer evening and weekend times
  • Continuity of care — see the same consultant at each visit
  • On-island convenience — avoid the expense and hassle of travelling to the UK

How It Works

Step 1 — Find a Specialist

Visit our Our Doctors page to browse our member specialists. Each doctor page includes their specialty, qualifications, and contact details.

Step 2 — Book Directly

Contact the specialist’s practice directly — no referral needed for most services. Call, email, or use their online booking system.

Step 3 — Your Appointment

Attend your appointment at the specialist’s clinic. They will assess your condition, discuss treatment options, and create a care plan tailored to you.

Step 4 — Follow-up Care

Your specialist will arrange any follow-up appointments and coordinate with your GP or other healthcare providers as needed.

Paying for Private Healthcare

There are three main ways to pay for private care:

Private Medical Insurance

Many islanders have private medical insurance through their employer. Our members accept most major UK insurers, including BUPA, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, Aetna, Cigna, WPA, and Healix. Contact your insurer to understand your coverage — some policies require a GP referral for certain conditions.

Self-Pay

You can pay for your own treatment. Many patients find this straightforward and transparent — you know exactly what you are paying for. Contact the practice directly for consultation fees.

NHS-funded Referral

Some conditions may be referred to private specialists funded by the NHS. This depends on your clinical situation and what arrangements exist between the Isle of Man and UK providers.

Contact the individual practice to confirm they accept your insurance and to get a clear estimate of costs before treatment.

What to Expect

When you book a private appointment, expect:

  • A scheduled time that suits you
  • A full consultation with the specialist (typically 30-60 minutes for first appointments)
  • Discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and treatment options
  • A clear treatment plan and cost estimate
  • Follow-up arrangements as needed

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

When booking or attending your appointment, consider asking:

  • Do I need a referral?
  • What are your consultation fees?
  • How quickly can I be seen?
  • Do you accept my insurance?
  • What does the initial consultation include?
  • Will I need tests or scans?
  • What are the treatment options?
  • What are the next steps if this requires further care?
